PORTAL 004
PORTAL 004 | Exercise and Coloring Book is a part of Elisa van Joolen's research project PORTAL. In this edition, Elisa worked with children from the primary school OBS Twiske together with students from the MA Fashion Strategy program at Artez to choose a garment, outline it’s silhouette with tape, and answer a series of sixteen questions related to the memories, make, and heritage behind their clothing. The result is an interconnected map of garments, materials and meaning. Included are additional questions and coloring pages for a child (or child-at heart!) to make a garmentory map of their own. This issue is encased within a protective plastic cover that has been screen printed to resemble the colorful tape used by the issue's participants.
Elisa van Joolen is a clothing practitioner that focuses on collaborative and community focused activations. Her ongoing research project PORTAL investigates the "economic, social and emotional value of clothing" through collecting data via interviews and questionnaires, observing social situations and events, and publications. Elisa holds a BA from Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and a MFA from Parsons New York. She currently teaches at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and is a visiting lecturer at Artez University of Art in the Netherlands. Elisa is also 1/3 of the fashion publishing and creative studio Amsterdam Warehouse, along with Hanka van der Voet and Femke de Vries.
