“Finding a genuine urge to want to create that comes from deep within. And going against the various challenges in society, in your own way, by living your own as you create. That feeling you expect towards someone who is waiting at the other end, beyond the whole act of creating. I feel that we live in times where that kind of experience and emotion become more and more precious. This is the kind of feeling that inspired the feature for this issue. And I hope you will enjoy.” —Nakako Hayashi, here and there 14

Here and there, Vol.14, the “Collage Issue,” published with Neives Books,  is informed by the ability of collage to take existing circumstances and realities and impose new narratives upon them. Featuring works by regular contributors within Nakako’s close community of artists and friends, including: Miranda July, Elien Fleiss (co-founder of Purple magazine) Susan Cianciolo, Yukinori Maeda (Center for Cosmic Wonder) and others, this issue is dedicated to the precious act of creation and creators, who despite the odds, find ways to circumvent convention and create their own ways of living and making. A quiet, very beautiful and thoughtful publication.

Nakako Hayashi is the founder, curator and editor of here and there. The magazine features her texts among a select group of writers and contemporary artists with whom she is in continuous dialogue. The first issue of here and there was published in 2002. After working for Hanatsubaki magazine (1988-2001) published by Shiseido, she became a freelance writer and editor. Through her writing in different media such as newspapers, magazines and web magazines, she continues to report on the works by artists who she finds intriguing. In 2011, she launched the much acclaimed book, Kakucho suru Fashion (Expanding Fashion)(Space Shower Networks), in which she introduced projects by international and Japanese artists seeking to present fashion in a contemporary way.
