A Magazine Curated By: Grace Wales Bonner
“I drift, picturing the alchemical records of Sun Ra by Ming Smith. In the skies, my eyes find stillness in timeless gestures of “astonishing grace.” I fly towards defiant self-portraits by Anthony Barboza of Kamoinge and Samuel Fosso taken in the 1970s in Harlem and Bagui, respectively. I continue to traverse time and space. I listen deeper for the sound.” —Grace Wales Bonner, “Curator’s Letter,” A Magazine Curated By N22, Rhapsody in the Street
This issue—titled Rhapsody in the Street—reads like a poem, and indeed much of it is poetry. Curated by the British-Jamaican fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner, this issue responds “to the tradition of Black poetry, literature and portrait photography of the 20th century.” Featuring luscious photography and lyric text that dance across matte and gloss paper stocks, Bonner weaves a tapestry of Black beauty, bodies, style and artistry through the ages. Garments from her namesake label Wales Bonner are featured in editorials throughout, while an opening and closing blessing frame the issue’s content.
